Divorce solicitors news – Facebook a factor in one-third of divorces

31st May 2012

According to a survey by an online firm of divorce solicitors, marital faux pas are now a regular occurrence on Facebook , with inappropriate and compromising messages frequently serving as evidence of infidelity or, at the least, disloyal and ignoble intentions.

The rise of Facebook is faithfully reflected in the figures – three years ago, the site was a factor in just 20 percent of all marital dissolutions, but this figure now stands at 33 percent.

Whereas thoughts of infidelity were once all in the mind, online technologies now allow disaffection or daydream infidelity to quickly turn more real.

“If someone wants to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex then Facebook is the easiest place to do it,” said a spokesperson.

And the impact of Facebook is being seen in other areas of family law, says the divorce solicitor firm. “People need to be careful what they write on their walls as the courts are seeing these posts being used in financial disputes and children cases as evidence,” it said.
