Paul Fretwell, head of George Ide LLP’s personal injury department, has secured a substantial six figure compensation award for a client who sustained multiple, life threatening injuries when she and her broken-down vehicle, displaying hazard warning lights, were struck by a lorry on the M1 motorway. The incident occurred on a section of motorway with no hard shoulder (due to road works). Thankfully, our client made an exceptionally good, though incomplete, recovery. Rehabilitation proved extremely beneficial to our client in her journey to resume normal life, including a return to work. Our client’s award has been protected by the creation of a personal injury trust. This case underlines the concerns many have about the implementation of “smart motorways”, which result in the removal of many of the hard shoulders and reduce the number of secure places of refuge for drivers and passengers of vehicles with mechanical problems.
