As a lawyer specialising in cases involving life-changing injury, I know what a lifeline Headway Sussex offers to those with acquired brain injury and their families. They provide a brilliant service, delivered with care and compassion. Small local charities such as this understand how to achieve the maximum value from every pound raised. The NHS of course does such great things, but pressures and funding constraints are ever-present, making charities such as Headway Sussex so very important. Therefore, my key goal is to raise as much sponsorship cash as possible for this great cause.
I, along with everyone else who took part, thoroughly enjoyed the George Ide Stride for Headway Sussex last summer, a very pleasant day walk along the South Downs during which we raised the fabulous total of £3,500 for this brilliant charity. It was great to enjoy the views in beautiful surroundings, and chat to fellow striders, particularly those from Headway Sussex.
Since then, in September 2022, my son and I walked a 140-mile section of the Sultan’s Trail between Bulgaria and Serbia. Walking that distance over seven days with heavy packs in 30 degree centigrade summer heat, camping ‘wild’ en route, turned out to be pretty bonkers! Our feet suffered greatly, and I ended up with cellulitis from infected blisters.
Notwithstanding this experience, I always intended a follow-up to last year’s Stride, and our Balkans walk taught me to put sensible plans in place for an achievable challenge. And so the 2023 George Ide Hike for Headway Sussex has developed into a three-day walk in early June along a 55-mile section of the South Downs Way. We’ll start in South Harting, stride out to Amberley and the Devil’s Dyke and then drop down to the coast to finish by the sea at Rottingdean.
Among the ranks of intrepid striders will be my son and my wife who, as designated driver, is charged with keeping me in check! Alongside us will be an amputee who has overcome serious injury to live an active and inspirational life, accompanied by his wife.
Please help us raise as much as we can for this amazing local charity – and be assured that no amount is too small to make a difference to the valuable work Headway Sussex does in support of so many families whose lives have been devastated by acquired brain injury.
You can donate by visiting the Just Giving page and please feel free to circulate the link – with my heartfelt thanks.
