Tax disputes made quicker through HMRC Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme
The alternative dispute resolution (ADR) programme will see “independent HMRC facilitators” mediating between the tax office and small business or individuals, who are in dispute over a tax issue, in an attempt to resolve the matter before the need for a tax tribunal.
Currently, the tribunal system is experiencing a sizeable backlog of claims and it is hoped that the speed and flexibility of the ADR scheme will shorten the length of time it takes to resolve many tax disputes.
It is also hoped that the scheme will bring down the number of claims which go to tribunal.
Richard Summersgill, HMRC director of local compliance, said, he was delighted to announce the introduction of alternative dispute resolution for small businesses and individuals into mainstream HMRC business.News
