Road safety plans to prevent further car accidents in Chichester

In September 2012 a road traffic accident (RTA) at the junction of the Salthill Road and the B2178 in West Sussex prompted the County Council to state in the local press that it would make funds available to ensure that the Chichester car accident blackspot was made safer.

The RTA which caused the concern involved a lorry which collided with a car at the junction. The car driver, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to hospital and this prompted local residents to voice fresh concerns about the frequency of crashes at this particular spot.

A council spokesperson told The Chichester Observer that a stretch of the road in the vicinity of the junction had already been identified as a danger area and had been resurfaced in 2011. Plus, in April 2012 it had been treated with new anti-skid materials.

“The red coloured material highlights the potential hazard of the junction to road users from both directions, while the high-friction surfacing has improved the skid resistance of the road,” commented the spokesperson.

A BT telegraph pole, positioned directly opposite the junction, was also targeted for removal and the spokesperson said that the council had been in talks with local landowners regarding the cutting back of hedges to improve visibility.

It was hoped that with these measures would help to reduce the number of further car accidents on Chichester’s busy roads.
